Hard wood floors are a terrific choice if you can afford them, and if you can spend some time in their maintenance. If your budget doesn't allow for an oak or cherry floor, consider a laminated wood floor instead. It's affordable and easy to maintain. It doesn't show as much water damage as other wood varieties, and it doesn't scratch or chip or dent like wood floors sometimes do in high traffic areas.
An entry level laminated floor will take low to moderate traffic with no problem at all. If you have a high traffic area that you want a wood floor for, consider a thicker core. Laminate floors come with a core thickness of 6 mm to 12 mm. A thicker core will not swell due to excessive moisture, and will not buckle or bend out of shape when walked on. This resistance to moisture makes laminated floors perfect for areas like bathrooms and kitchens, where the potential for water damage is high.
Laminated floors are versatile, quite sturdy, and good looking to boot. They are the perfect choice if you want wood-like looks with out a wood-like price tag. A laminated floor looks great, and can last for a long time, it's easy to care for too. We are moving into this home on May 21st - we would like to get an estimate on refinishing all floors in the upstairs. There are 4 bedrooms, 2 walk in closets, several small closets and a hallway - all about 775 sq ft There is currently carpet in all the areas except one bedroom which has a finished floor. I have pulled up the carpet and floors look good underneath. I would like to have the whole area refinished.

I have a bedroom with 275 sq ft with carpet over concrete, I need a ball-park estimate for hardwood floors. Not sure about the wood, please give me a range from an intermediate to a high-quality wood.
